About the data
This deployable build uses prebuilt CSV files refreshed from FRED before publishing, so it can run as a static site without a data proxy.

Method
The tab uses Massive-built static files and a transparent rule set: select the 10 largest U.S. listed stocks by market cap from the candidate universe, assign each a 10.00% weight, and compound the average adjusted daily return from a base value of 1,000.

The most useful market view is not the one with the most data. It is the one that makes the next good question easier to see.
An index can rise while fewer stocks carry the weight. Breadth reveals whether participation is becoming sturdier or more fragile.
A useful summary should shorten the path to understanding without hiding the evidence that supports it.
The first glance should orient you. The second should reward curiosity with context, comparison, and provenance.

Market context
Primary sources
A practical framework for choosing market signals, preserving their provenance, and presenting them without burying the reader.
Financial dashboards often begin with a familiar assumption: if one chart is useful, twelve charts must be better. The result can be technically impressive and practically exhausting. More information arrives, while understanding stays flat.
We begin with the decision a reader is trying to make. Is participation broadening or narrowing? Is a price move supported by volume? Is a company development material enough to revisit the thesis? Each question implies a different set of observable evidence.
This reverses the usual build order. Instead of arranging every available field and asking the reader to discover a story, the product defines the research question first and admits only the evidence that can answer it.
A useful signal needs more than a value. It needs a source, an observation time, a comparison period, and an explicit failure state. Without those fields, a dashboard cannot distinguish a meaningful change from stale or incomplete data.
At TradingHiFi, the interface is the final stage of that pipeline. Source links, timestamps, and unavailable states stay close to the number they qualify. The reader should never have to guess whether a value is current or where it came from.
Visual hierarchy is part of the research method. The strongest contrast belongs to what changed. Supporting context is quieter but available. Definitions and provenance sit one level deeper. This makes a fast scan useful without making a slow read shallow.
A calm interface is not decoration. It is a constraint that forces the system to rank evidence, expose uncertainty, and make every element justify the attention it consumes.
Headline indexes summarize direction. Breadth shows how widely the market agrees.
A headline index compresses hundreds of individual outcomes into one number. That makes it useful, but incomplete.
Capitalization-weighted indexes can rise while a small group of large companies does most of the work. The index reports the return correctly, but it does not describe how participation is distributed beneath it.
Advance-decline measures, sector participation, new highs and lows, and the share of stocks above trend levels each reveal a different part of market structure. No single measure is definitive; agreement across several is more informative than any one reading.
We treat breadth as context rather than a timing trigger. Narrow participation can persist, and broad participation can fade. Its value is in exposing concentration and prompting better questions about leadership, durability, and risk.
Good summaries save time without severing the reader from the evidence.
Market stories accumulate interpretation quickly. Press releases become headlines; headlines become commentary; commentary becomes consensus.
Every retelling can add useful context, but it can also blur what a company, regulator, or statistical agency actually said. Numbers lose their comparison periods. Conditional language becomes certainty. Publication time is mistaken for event time.
We retain the original URL, publisher, publication time, event time when available, and the specific claim supported by the source. Secondary reporting can add corroboration, but it does not replace the primary record.
Direct links to filings, releases, and official datasets make a summary auditable. They let readers verify wording, notice omissions, and form a view that is genuinely their own. Provenance is not a footnote; it is part of the product.
A financial interface should orient the fast reader and reward the careful one.
Good financial interfaces work at more than one speed. A fast scan should surface change and direction. A slower read should reveal history, definitions, and sources.
The first look answers orientation questions: what moved, by how much, and when? The second look asks why, compared with what, and according to which source? Serving both modes requires hierarchy, not duplication.
We keep concise evidence at the surface, then reveal richer history and provenance where curiosity naturally develops. The reader should not have to leave the workflow to understand a metric, but the explanation should not compete with the metric before it is needed.
Every label, color, animation, and alert spends attention. Treating that attention as finite produces quieter interfaces and sharper decisions. The goal is not to keep the reader engaged. It is to make the reader's engagement worthwhile.
